Introduction
One of the more exciting projects coming up in 2025 within the RaspberryPi world is the forthcoming Argon40 Upton One laptop.
For those unfamiliar with the company called Argon40, they are well known to Raspberry Pi users as they have been a developer and maker of add-on products such 3D printed cases and enclosures for various RPI boards.
In 2025 this has extended to the laptop form factor called the Upton One, which has two groovy features including: a Compute Module 5 board. and a breakout GPIO dongle that will take the space on a single USB port.
The Detail
Some technoids already consider the Upton One to be a novelty project. But then again, most RPI projects are, so that's nothing new. The Laptop chassis appears to be quite thin, the Compute Module board slots into the underside. Keeping it cool will be of concern.But rest assured that keeping boards cool is Argon40's bread and butter.
RaspberryPi uses dual 100-pin high-density connectors as it did on Compute Module 4, enabling a compatible upgrade to Compute Module 5. Conceivably Argon could upgrade the Upton One when the Compute Module 6 arrives if the 100-pin connectors are still in use. Word out there suggests the 100 pin config will remain. If so, the performance should be jaw dropping.
The appeal here is being able to perform laptop activities without breaking the bank. Also, the power requirements will be much less. My guess is that it will utilise USB power, though what those specs actually are at this point is unknown.
In Summary
As it is still early days, there are only two online references to the Upton One. The first a demo at a recent Tech Show where an early prototype was unveiled.
According to the video, the Upton One is not finalized yet in terms of specifications, but they are looking at a late summer (Northern Hemisphere) release with an estimated price somewhere around US$400, available via a Crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign. Final prices may also include some tariff impacts depending where Argon40 manufactures the device.
The second reference is to a Tom's Hardware article which is where I first saw it. There's a lot more detail in the article, though the reviewer is only speculating basing his article on photos only.
